Is There Such A Thing As Happy Food

And no we don’t mean the McDonalds “Happy Meal”. Fortunately there is. What we eat can actually affect our mood. Many of us have been told to avoid comfort foods as they are full of sugar. Whilst this is true, they can in fact be good for us too. Particularly when we are feeling unhappy, this is because certain foods are capable of improving our moods and therefore make us feel happier. If you’re feeling down and need a boost, then below are some healthier types of food that can help you.

Eggs:
Did you know that eggs are actually a great way to fight depression? This means eating the yolk of the egg too, as this is the most important part of the egg and has the ability to help us feel happier. Eggs, and more importantly the yolk are a happy food as they are full of vitamin B. These B vitamins are the perfect way to lift a mood, since they improve the way in which the neural transmitters function. This is the part of the brain that affects our moods.

Seeds and Nuts:
Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, peanuts, almonds and cashews are all great foods to eat as they can help to improve our moods. These are a great happy food as they are a rich source of magnesium and increase the serotonin levels in our brain. The substance known as serotonin tells our brain how we feel, therefore the more serotonin produced the happier you will feel.

Fish:
If you are suffering with depression then fish is the ideal food to eat. Omega-3 and DHA can be found in tuna fish, trout, salmon, mackerel and herring. This substance increases the functioning and quality of our brain’s grey matter, therefore helping us to fight against depression.

Grains:
You can eliminate a bad mood by eating grains such as millet, barley and quinoa. These are all excellent types of happy food, and can boost our levels of happiness. In addition to this, they also make us feel full. Did you know that feeling hungry can actually make you feel unhappy? Foods such as these can be digested easily. This means that they raise our blood sugar and therefore improve our mood.

Green Tea:
You can become healthy and happy through drinking green tea. The amino acid known as L-theanine can be found in green tea, this is effective in stimulating our brain waves. This stimulation allows us to improve our mental energy and also helps us to relax. So if you want to raise your mood and become happier then switch your regular tea for green tea.

So as you can see, you don’t need to comfort eat and rely on junk food to make you feel better. You can achieve happiness though eating the happy food types that are listed above.
